Don Mattingly Online - January 2003 Interview
.: January 2003 Interview :.
======================= Interview begins here. ======================= Nicholas wrote: Hello, and thank you for this great opportunity. I am 26 years old, and am from the Bronx, but now live in London. Growing up in the 1980's, (and of course a Yankee fan), my whole life was based around you and the Yanks! T-Shirts, autographs, posters, cards, etc, I really enjoyed watching you and the Yanks play, on T.V. or at the game. My question for you is, how are you doing? That is all. I figure, that sometimes when a boy has a hero, (and you were mine, and still are), that man or women, never leaves his heart and thoughts. For all these years, I still look at what memorabilia I have left, and when I see your card, I get that warm feeling inside. I reminder of my youth, and a better time. I can't remember how many home runs you had, nor care. I just loved watching you play. Take Care and god bless! Don Mattingly wrote: Nicholas, Thanks for being fan, I hope London is treating you good. I hope to get over there someday. I am doing great, our boys are healthy, my family is doing good. I am staying busy with numerous projects. Between the horse farm, the Yankees, MLB, and the new team. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ============================================== JOE wrote: HEY, IM A BIG FAN OF YOURS ,JUST WONDERING IF YOU ARE EVER COMING TO FLORIDA FOR ANY FUND RAISERS OR AUTOGRAPH SIGNINGS .IT WOULD BE A PLEASURE TO SOME DAY GET TO MEET YOU . THANKS FOR YOUR TIME YOUR BIGGEST FAN JOE Don Mattingly wrote: Joe, Nothing in the books for Florida, but it seems I am in Tampa often for the Yanks. No signings planned for that area, but I suppose there is a chance in the future. Nothing as of this date. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ============================================== Scott wrote: Hi Don, I was wondering when you are going to start coaching for the Yankees actually when you think you will get back to baseball full time. Thanks again for all the great years with the yanks. all the best . Scott Don Mattingly wrote: Scott, Our youngest son is in the fifth grade and so we still feel like we have a few years before he is ready to fly on his own. Then I am thinking that would be a good time frame. To answer your question, yes I would love to, but we will see how things are going later on. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ============================================== Stacey wrote: Hi Don, do you think there would be any chance of the Otters playing our new team in any sort of exhibition game. Also I just want to say thanks for helping bring MLB back to Evansville. I live in Vincennes and I love the fact that I can drive 45 minutes to watch some baseball. Thanks Don, Stacy Don Mattingly wrote: Stacey, Any of those types of decisions would be made by the affiliate organization (Dodgers). This would not be up to the team owners. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ============================================== Shawn wrote: I live in Evansville and I have always been a very big fan, but I have never had the chance to meet you. How could I go about getting a baseball or picture autographed by you? Thanks, Shawn. Don Mattingly wrote: Shawn, I am pretty low-key in Evansville. Just trying to be a part of raising three boys. We will be getting our online store up and running soon or you may catch me around town somewhere. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ============================================== Justin wrote: Yes I currently heard that you bought a minor league team and you are moving it to Evansville. I was wondering if that was true and if you will be there much. I am one of your biggest fans and wanted to meet you sometime. You are great and your time will come and you will be in the hall. Well thanks for your time. Justin Don Mattingly wrote: Justin, Yes, it is true. I am in partnership with Cal and Billy Ripken and the Ripken Baseball Organization. The majority owner is David Heller and he is moving the team from South Georgia to my hometown of Evansville, Indiana. I plan to be a big part of it. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ============================================== Anthony wrote: Hi Mr. Mattingly. I miss seeing you on the ball field immensely.you where the greatest ballplayer I ever had the privilege to watch. I really hope you make the hall of fame.if presented with the managers job of the Yankees would you accept somewhere down the line. take care,Anthony Don Mattingly wrote: Anthony, If I had to answer today for somewhere down the line, I would say Yes. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ============================================== Jason wrote: Don, Let me begin by saying that you have and will always be my favorite baseball player. I am 31 years-old, and grew up in Long Island, New York. I have been in the United States Navy now for 10 years, as a Cryptologin Technician. I wish you had been able to win a world series while playing. I know your work ethic and attitude towards the game has and will be marveled forever. Ok here's the question, just had to add that stuff in the beginning. This off season we picked up Hideki Matsui and Jose Contrerras, both of which will hopefully produce well and help us win another World Series. But would you have rather gone after Vladimir Guerrero and Bartolo Colon, as younger and proven Major League stars? At long last I wish you and your family well, and hope to someday meet you at a game. Take care and good luck with the minor league club! Jason Don Mattingly wrote: Jason, Thanks for being a fan. I am not really involved with the decisions of the organization, but it is hard to argue with the success of all our acquisitions in the past few years. I am sure these will work as well. God Bless the USA. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ============================================== Susan wrote: What are your memories of the 1st home run you ever hit? Don Mattingly wrote: Susan, I thought it was a double, because it bounced back on the field. It was against John Tudor at Finway. A line drive, right down the line that I rapped around Peske's Pole. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ============================================== Rachael wrote: Tell us where you grew up? Why did you become a baseball player and what your childhood is like? Don Mattingly wrote: Rachael, I grew up in Evansville, Indiana. I was the youngest of four boys. We played sports around the clock. I did not choose baseball, baseball chose me. My first love was basketball, but baseball is obviously what I did best. I grew up with great parents, who have given me and our entire family a solid foundation to grow up on.
