Don Mattingly Online - May 2003 Interview
.: May 2003 Interview :.
======================= Interview begins here. ======================= John wrote: You were a great player and deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. Growing up in the 80's you were one of my idols......I know baseball and over time you will be properly placed in Cooperstown.! My question is "were you surprised you didn't make the Hall on the first try?" I was!!!!! Don Mattingly wrote: John, No, I did not expect to make it on my first try. There are a lot of great players not in the Hall yet. I feel it would be disrespectful to feel that I deserved to be in the Hall on my first try. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Mike wrote: Dear Mr. Mattingly, My name is Mike, I am 12 years old. I know you probably hear this everyday, but I am your biggest fan. I know it's impossible but I hope to be as good as you one day. I also hope to make it to the major leagues. Well, my question to you is......."What does it take to make the majors?" It would be thrilling if you wrote me back. Don Mattingly wrote: Mike, All it takes is Talent, Love, Heart, Belief, and a little Luck. Good luck to you! Sincerely, Don Mattingly Anthony wrote: Please tell me I'm not crazy. When I was little I remember you hitting a home run into the black bleachers at Yankee Stadium. It was against the Toronto Blue Jays and both Claudell Washington and Rickey Henderson were on the team. It was the bottom of the ninth and the Yanks were trailing by two when you hit the shot to tie the game. The Yankees lost in the 11th inning. Did this happen or did I dream it? Thanks. Don Mattingly wrote: Anthony, I am not 100% sure, but I do not think I ever hit one into the black bleachers during a game. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Brian wrote: Don, You have always been my favorite player. I am formerly from Long Island, NY. I am now in college playing baseball for the University of Washington. I am a left-handed pitcher, I am a spot starter and reliever. I am supposed to be very effective against left handed hitters but have an easier time with righties. What would your approach be as a hitter against a left-handed pitcher with an average fastball(89-91), a slider and a change? Don Mattingly wrote: Brian, 91 is not that bad for one. I would look for the slider if I was not familiar with the pitcher at all. Sincerely, Don Mattingly John wrote: Dear Don- Who was your agent? Don Mattingly wrote: John, Jim Krivacs was my agent. Best thing I ever did in baseball was to go with Jim. Great guy, great person! Sincerely, Don Mattingly Nick wrote: Hey don, hugs fan of yours. My question is, we have an intramural softball team here at my college (slippery rock university (PA) ) and our team's name is the throwbacks, and each player is depicting a baseball great, and my choice was you. Now, if I were to depict you, how would I go about it first? Would I go classic 90's all-star look, and just go with the first baseman eye black, mustache, and sideburns? or should I go with the late mattingly goatee with no eye black? Which do you prefer in paying homage to the greatest first baseman in baseball history? Thanks so much for listening, your biggest fan, Nick. ps-in 91' you autographed a donruss baseball card for me at a yankees/indians game. Thanks! Don Mattingly wrote: Nick, Funny stuff! Go with the first baseman eye black, mustache, and sideburns! Sincerely, Don Mattingly Keith wrote: Excluding Barry Bonds and his poor defensive skills, who is the one guy that you would love to play with and why? Don Mattingly wrote: Keith, I would have loved to have played with a lot of players. If I had the chance, George Brett would have been great to play with. Sincerely, Don Mattingly John wrote: Do you remember hitting a grand slam in an afternoon game at Greensboro, NC? Don Mattingly wrote: John, I did not hit very many homers there. I have hit a few grand slams, but I do not remember that in particular. I am getting old, I could be having memory relapses, hehe. That was in 1980. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Jason wrote: Hey Donnie just wondering how your back is these days and if any of your boys are going to be ball players to. By the way thanks for all the memories. I drive my girlfriend crazy with Donnie baseball stories. bye Don Mattingly wrote: Jason, Back is good, Taylor got drafted in the 42nd round for the Yankees! Sincerely, Don Mattingly Abraham wrote: Mr Mattingly, Which one of your own baseball cards is your favorite? Don Mattingly wrote: Abraham, Oh gosh, I have no idea. I have seen so many, there is a lot of them I do not like. But, there is a few I love, depends on the position. I favor the ones where it looks like I am about to make a good play. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Susan wrote: Hi Donnie, Thanks for all your terrific answers! I really appreciate all the time & care you put into doing this. My question is, how's the farm doing lately? How many horses do you have right now? How much time do you spend there during a typical day? Well, thanks again & hope all is well! Don Mattingly wrote: Susan, Good question! The farm is doing very good. I spend portions of everyday there. During the summer I spend from 7 am to 12 pm there. In the afternoon I spend about an hour. In the winter, it depends on the weather. Right now we have 23 horses, that is a good number. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ======================= Interview ends here. =======================
