Don Mattingly Online - November 2003 Interview
.: November 2003 Interview :.
======================= Interview begins here. ======================= Paul Wrote: Dear Don, Like most visitors to your site, I am a very big fan of yours. I am such a fan that I named my second son Dylan Mattingly. While browsing your Web site I noticed that there was a couple that named their daughter after you. My question to you is are we the only people who have named children after you or have you heard of other instances? By the way, four or five years ago I saw a picture in the paper of a head stone with the inscription, Don Mattingly Fan. Now that was a *big* fan! Don Mattingly Wrote: Paul, I have heard of a few, not a lot. I have also heard of a few animals. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Roger Wrote: Mr. Mattingly, I recently attended the recent Old Timers Day at Yankee Stadium and it was a real pleasure to see you on the field again. After all these years you still get the biggest ovation whenever you come back to the stadium. How does it make you feel when, after all these years, Yankee fans still show their appreciation for everything you did in pinstripes? Don Mattingly Wrote: Roger, New York always makes me feel good. It has been a special place for my family and I. I will always be grateful for having the opportunity to play for the New York Fans. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Coronado Wrote: Don, I just wanted to know if there was any hope of you releasing a career video highlights DVD in the future? I'm sure all your fans would buy it and make a bestseller. Don Mattingly Wrote: Coronado, Never thought about that, I think what is done is done. We should move into the present. I think that picture of my career has been painted, time to start a new painting. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Mike Wrote: Don, Growing up in Fort Lauderdale you were my favorite player of all time. In fact I still wear a pin with you swinging a bat on my hat when I play in my men's league and softball games. I know it has to be a bit disappointing to never make it to the World Series but other than that what other achievement do you wish you could have accomplished before you retired from the game? Don Mattingly Wrote: Mike, The World Series is obviously what everyone plays for, but I think looking back I think I would have liked to play long enough to be a 3,000 Hit Guy. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Tony Wrote: Hi Mr. Mattingly, I am a huge fan of yours. I was watching Center Stage this evening on the YES Network and saw your interview. During the interview Michael Kay asked you what your favorite book was and you answered the Bible, saying that it is the book you read most often. What great courage you showed by answering that question the way you did! I was so surprised and excited to hear you say that and I am hoping you could briefly share your testimony with me. Are you a Christian? Were you during your years in baseball, or did you accept Christ afterwards? As a Christian father and husband what would you say your greatest struggle is? Do you have a favorite passage? Thank you for reading my email. I would be grateful for a reply if you have the time. God bless you and your family. Don Mattingly Wrote: Tony, I was a Christian through my years in baseball, but it seems like it's getting more and more comfortable talking about, as I have gotten older. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Shelley Wrote: Mr. Mattingly or Donnie Baseball; as you are reverently called in this household, though I am a female, I am an extreme N.Y. Yankee fan and have been my whole life. As a young child my favorite Yankee was Thurman Munson. After his passing, I chose a new favorite Yankee which of course is you. I thank you for providing me with so many notable Yankee memories. Anyway, my question may seem a bit odd because it has nothing to do with baseball and is really for Mrs. Mattingly. During Don Mattingly Day at the Stadium, your wife Kim was wearing a dark blue pinstriped suit with a Yankee symbol. Did she have that specially made or can it be purchased somewhere? I am a teacher and would love to add that outfit to my closet. Don Mattingly Wrote: Shelley, At first Kim would not release her secrets. She reconsidered, she said Cache in Evansville, Indiana. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Joe Wrote: Hi Don, First, just to say I am a big fan of yours and got to watch you play your whole career with the Yankees. My question is, what types of horses do you breed, and do you ever come out to the Big Horse show in Harrisburg PA? Thank you and stay well. Don Mattingly Wrote: Joe, We breed American Sadlebreads. Our world championship is in Louisville Kentucky. There are shows all over the country, but that is our biggest show. Not quite sure about any show in PA, Kim and I have never been there. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Mike Wrote: Don, Why didn't you wear a C for Captain on your Jersey when you played? Don Mattingly Wrote: Mike, I have seen it recently in baseball, but before that I had never seen it. The Yankees have never made that a policy, and to me it seems unnecessary. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Anthony Wrote: Donnie Baseball, You had such a great approach to hitting, the quiet stance and then the explosion through the ball. It was a thing of beauty. In today's game, is there a hitter from the left side that you love to watch or more importantly, is there a hitter who reminds you of yourself in terms of approach and/or style? Thanks for all of the wonderful memories. NY will never forget you!! Don Mattingly Wrote: Anthony, I was a guy that used the whole field and anyone that does that basically takes the same approach. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Tom Wrote: Hey Don, thanks for the memories. I think I was the happiest kid in the world when I met you at the Yankees fan festival. Do you think that pitchers put more emphasis on payback pitches these days? It seems like analysts talk more openly about it and frankly, seem to expect it in many situations. Don Mattingly Wrote: Tom, Good pitchers pitch inside. When they start doing that and they hit someone they do not really worry about it. It is just part of the game. When someone throws it at one of their teammates, the better pitchers are the guys who retaliate quickly, and then it is over. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ======================= Interview ends here. =======================
