Don Mattingly Online - October 2003 Interview
.: October 2003 Interview :.
======================= Interview begins here. ======================= Danny Wrote: What are your signing habits at the stadium since you will be coaching? I live in Minnesota and would like to get your autograph next year. When is the best time to get your autograph, before, inside, or after by the bus)? Do you try to sign for everyone or just kids like me? Thanks a ton. Don Mattingly Wrote: Danny, Not sure, I have never coached before so I do not have any habits. I do not try to differentiate, kids are a priority, but I do as much as I can. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Pete Wrote: Now that you agreed to be the Yanks hitting instructor, would you feel fulfilled if you won the World Series as a coach, even though you never won one as a player? Don Mattingly Wrote: Pete, I feel fine with everything right now the way it is. For me, going back to coaching is about helping the team, not about me. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Pat Wrote: Don, As always big fan here. I would like to know if you think of there should be a left hand and right hand hitting coach in the game today? Would this in your opinion target the hitters better? Don Mattingly Wrote: Pat, I do not think so. A swing is a swing. The mechanics of the swing are the same for a lefty or a righty. Being a hitting coach is about a lot more than just mechanics. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Chris Wrote: Donnie Baseball, First of all, WELCOME BACK!!! Can't tell you how much I've wanted this. Here is my question. Now that you're back in pinstripes, will you be growing your mustache in again? Thanks! Don Mattingly Wrote: Chris, My wife says yes, and I have been married for 24 years and any men out there know what's going to happen next. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Michael Wrote: Don, You probably hear this all the time but I am a big fan. I would like to thank you for the signed ball. My dad trims your trees you probably don't remember me but I was the one with him a few summers ago. You're truly a nice man. Well, here is my question. Now that you are the hitting coach do you think when Taylor is playing for the Yankees you will be manager? Don Mattingly Wrote: Michael, It was a pleasure meeting you, I hope you are still enjoying baseball. Not sure about Taylor, he is going to have to make his own path. Say hello to your dad and mom for me. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Tim Wrote: Hi Don, It's great to have you back in pinstripes. My question is, now that your back what is the thing you are most looking forward to being back in New York? Don Mattingly Wrote: Tim, New York Pizza! Sincerely, Don Mattingly James Wrote: Mr. Mattingly What do you foresee as your greatest challenge in being the hitting coach for the Yankees? Don Mattingly Wrote: James, Well, I am not sure. I think just getting into the everyday routine and getting to know about every player's personality will be my greatest challenge. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Tim Wrote: Donnie, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting you for the first time recently at the Hall of Heroes signing on Father's Day. You're my favorite modern day player. Being there on Father's Day spoke volumes of you in and of it itself. Perhaps what impressed me most however, was how personable, accommodating, and engaging you are. There had to be 400+ people there, each with at least one item to sign. I happened to be near the end of the line and by the time my number came up, you were at least as great as you were for those at the front of the line. My question is, what keeps you so grounded and humble? Thanks for the experience of a lifetime. Don Mattingly Wrote: Tim, "Jesus" Sincerely, Don Mattingly Isaac Wrote: Dear Mr. Mattingly, I'm one of your BIGGEST, MOST DIE-HARD Fans!! Thank you for all the years and memories you gave me! Anyway, my question to you is: Which player today reminds you most of yourself when you played? Don Mattingly Wrote: Isaac, I would have to say, Chipper Jones. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Stephen Wrote: It is being reported here in New York that in your senior year in High School you never once swung and missed at a pitch. Is this true? Don Mattingly Wrote: Stephen, I am not absolutely sure, but I cannot remember missing one. I know I did not strike out. I always remembered being surprised if I ever swung through a ball, not including balls outside the strike zone. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ======================= Interview ends here. =======================
