Don Mattingly Online - February 2004 Interview
.: February 2004 Interview :.
======================= Interview begins here. ======================= Kevin Wrote: Hi Don, Mickey Mantle was my favorite player as a kid & you were my favorite as an adult. What was it like the first time you walked through the Monument area at Yankee stadium? THX, Kevin. Don Mattingly Wrote: Kevin, It was pretty neat. I loved reading all the plaques and checking out the monuments. I did not go out there that much. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Randy Wrote: Since the day you have retired I have been waiting for you to become the hitting coach of the Yankees. Now that you are I'm excited again about Yankee baseball. As a hitting coach, do you try and implement your theory of hitting or do you see what the hitter's theory is and make small adjustments to fit the hitter's style? Don Mattingly Wrote: Randy, Definitely work with each hitter individually. I do not try to push my style on anyone. I use the hitter's strengths. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Phil Wrote: One quick question for you Mr. Mattingly, does a relative by the name Lisa Mattingly referee for NCAA basketball? GOOD LUCK WITH THE YANKEES!!!!!!!!! If she does I have never met her. I will be looking for her now! Sincerely, Don Mattingly Howie Wrote: You played third, I believe for a brief time in the majors. Do you believe a lefty with great skills could play third, short, second or catch in the majors? Has a lefty ever played these positions in organized ball? (College, minors, majors) Howie Don Mattingly Wrote: Howie, There have been people that have tried before. Third is tough because of the angles it is a right-handed position. First is easier to play for a lefty than it is for a righty, but a right-hander can certainly do it. I have never understood why there cannot be a left catcher. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Robert Wrote: I wanted to know that now that you are back with the Yankees, and with all the new additions do you think your job is going be difficult. I admire you from the first time you came up. You were such a great hitter and I believe that you will be great at this job. Good luck and hope to see you at Tampa in March when the kids and I check out the new Yankees. Don Mattingly Wrote: Robert, Well, I think the entire thing is difficult, period. We have had a lot of great players that have had good years. I do not plan on good players making it any easier, but good players can also develop bad habits. That is something I am watching out for. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Mike Wrote: Dear Mr. Mattingly, I have a question about a suit you were wearing in a baseball card entitled "Hitman." What kind of suit was that and where did you get it if you remember. I am getting married 8/28/04 and I am interested in wearing a suit similar in style (pinstriped). Thank you for your time. Don Mattingly Wrote: Mike, I got it from the company that shot the poster, Converse. They had it made. I guess it was made out of baseball jersey material and Yankee pinstripes, just like the uniform. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Mike Wrote: Hi Don, Although you are the hitting coach, do you think you'll work with Jason Giambi this year on his fielding skills at all? Don Mattingly Wrote: Mike, Yeah, we work on everything. If anyone there needs something defensively or we see something from a coaching point of view we try to help. Especially with him playing first that is something I may be able to help him with. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Chris Wrote: If you could have played with any second baseman in history who would it be? Don Mattingly Wrote: Chris, Never thought about it, but I really enjoyed playing next to Willie Randolph. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Nick Wrote: Do you know what "Frog Gigging" is? Don Mattingly Wrote: Nick, Sure I do! Yeah, you go at night, shine the lights and stab them with the gig! Sincerely, Don Mattingly Susan Wrote: Hi Donnie, How would you describe yourself as a teammate? What do you think makes a great teammate? Thanks, Susan Don Mattingly Wrote: Susan, I really do not like to talk about myself, but I think someone that makes a great teammate is someone you know is giving you everything they have every time. Someone who makes a great friend off the field also is a good teammate. Someone you can trust. Sincerely, Don Mattingly ======================= Interview ends here. =======================
