Don Mattingly Online - January 2004 Interview
.: January 2004 Interview :.
======================= Interview begins here. ======================= Susan wrote: What is a typical day like for you at Spring Training so far? Don Mattingly wrote: Susan, I get up at about 6:30 AM. I got a show I watch in the morning. Then I brush my teeth, have a cup of coffee, and head to the field. Usually, I run about 15 to 20 minutes or work out for about 20 minutes then I start extra hitting. Then I do my regular work out. I usually get done around 2 PM. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Carolyn wrote: As one of the greatest ball players of all time, what is your advice or words of wisdom for your longtime fans when it comes to just keeping a good attitude about life and being happy? Don Mattingly wrote: Carolyn, I think it all starts with being true to yourself and your beliefs. Be sure your priorities are in the right place. I think at that point you will be just fine and things will fall into place. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Marsha wrote: Don, Do you remember your first autograph given when you were in the major leagues back in 1982? How did you feel when asked? Don Mattingly wrote: Marsha, I am not sure if I remember the first autograph. I do remember being very excited that someone actually wanted it. I was amazed that someone wanted me to sign something. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Jimmy wrote: I have always been a Mickey Mantle fan. I have also, admired you and the way you played the game. My question for you is, did you ever get any advice from the Mick? Do you have a favorite memory of him to share? Good luck with the Yankees in 2004 and I hope you eventually get into the Hall of Fame. Don Mattingly wrote: Jimmy, My favorite memory was Micky always treated me great. He lik3ed the way I played and treated my like one of the guys. He gave me a lot of respect. It made me feel good that he enjoyed the way I played. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Wayne wrote: I noticed that in some photos, your batting stances seemed to vary some. Which stance were you the most comfortable with and did you change your stance any after your back problems? Good Luck as the Hitting Coach- I know you will do well! Don Mattingly wrote: Wayne, It definitely changed after my injury. I do think I used too many stances in my career. I did change around a lot. That is the way I did it, not really the right way, but that is how things turned out for me. I would recommend that if you need to change your stance to make small changes and keep your stance the same basically. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Jason wrote: Don! I've always been a big fan. I got an autographed baseball for my birthday. My question is: How do you think you will have an impact to the Yankees as the new hitting coach? Don Mattingly wrote: Jason, I am not quite sure how I will impact. Hopefully I have something to bring to the table. I think you would have to ask the players at the end of the year. I think the way the club swings the bat and how the players feel about me at the end of the year will answer that question. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Paul wrote: First off I have been waiting years to go back to the stadium and see you in the dugout. Congrats, you truly deserve the position. As for my question, I was wondering if you still hit the cages or practice with your sons to keep sharp. Thanks. Don Mattingly wrote: Paul, I do not actually swing in the cages. I am in the cages with my boys, but I cannot say I get in and hit anymore. Those days are over for me. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Rick wrote: Don, How does it feel to be back in pinstripes (where you belong)? You have been my idol ever since I was a little kid, and I am thrilled to know that you will be back at Yankee Stadium. By the way, during game 7 I rubbed your picture for good luck! Don Mattingly wrote: Rick, It feels good to be back in uniform. It feels like I have been back the last few years with spring training. Even though I was not on the field much. I am very excited. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Oscar wrote: Mr. Mattingly, I have been a fan of yours since I played as a Yankee team on a baseball game on my first computer. I have question: How do you plan to apply your experiences as a player to your new coaching job? Don Mattingly wrote: Oscar, Again, I think very gradually. When you talk to the players it is something you may see in their eyes or things they are doing that you have experienced before. Hopefully, you can detect something going on in their swing or their thought process that is causing them problems. Sincerely, Don Mattingly Matt wrote: Hey Don, The episode of The Simpson's featuring you and your fellow all-stars was absolutely hilarious! Are you a big fan of the show and, if so, what's your favorite episode? Thanks for being one of my favorite players and best of luck to you. Don Mattingly wrote: Matt, I do not watch a lot of TV. I have seen a few of their episodes and I think they are funny. Obviously, the baseball one is my favorite.
